Morocco.....the spellbinding land of old medinas and exotic spices. The beauty is unparalleled...the scent of Morocco will forever be engrained in who I am. I could spend a hundred lives there and still I would yearn to live just one more.
Scent of Morocco is an ongoing project that began as an idea I had after I earned my Masters of Photography degree. As a US Navy veteran I often daydreamed of returning back to wandering the earth and expanding my understanding and knowledge of far off places. My mind searched for something challenging and beautiful, a substantial body of work to express myself deeply now that I knew my own photographic language. When I found the artist residency with Green Olive Arts in Tetouan, Morocco I knew I was going to be a stranger in an exotic land once more and I was humbled and I was grateful and I vowed to put my soul into capturing and telling a truthful and honest visual story. With an open heart and my greatest intentions, I departed for my residency and unbeknownst to me, my life was forever changed by the beautiful people of Morocco, some of who I now consider to be my family. I have returned to Morocco one more time to continue the work, embarking on a 2,000 mile expedition with my assistant Naoufal. The journey was intense, rewarding, challenging, and humbling and will continue in the fall of 2023. The images are a result of being open to human connection, I carry with me many images that I only captured with my mind as I enjoyed every moment in Morocco. As a photographer and sensitive person, I know I could return 100 times and still have more story to tell. This project is ongoing, it is a collection of black and white images...environmental portraiture, landscape, and still life images. I have a love affair with the world, exploring and honoring the people and places that come across my lens and hope this sensitivity never wanes.
