Shelter in Place, A Moment in Time

Photographer:

Project Description:

"Shelter in Place, A Moment in Time" was created during the first few weeks of the pandemic in 2020. I began the project during the end of March and worked furiously capturing as many families and types of households as I could until the first few days of May..... I could feel the moment slipping away and the next chapter beginning. It all began one evening on my nightly run passing through the abandoned streets. How surreal it all seemed in that moment. The houses were full but the city was empty. My mind reached for the beauty of the moment, the light in the darkness, the pride of experiencing something so profound within the walls of these homes.  I thought of my neighbors, how I had wanted to gift them with a family portrait for their daughters graduation. I knew they had never had it done before and it hurt that I couldn't now deliver the special gift of capturing their love and togetherness. I thought of how families now confined would be reimagining who they were, their family dynamic, and experiencing an intimacy born of a terrifying pandemic. The photographer in me yearned to bring something stunning, a love story from me to the world, memorializing a historic moment in time and honoring the great equalizer of a world wide pandemic. These portraits were captured in Northern California. True to pandemic distancing, these families never stepped outside and I never crossed their threshold. My arms ached to hug each and every one of them as they gifted me with these formal and unique environmental portraits often bringing tears to my eyes as I drove away into the evening. I am honored to have unburned my soul and created this precious collection, truly this was a once in a lifetime moment in time.
