The City of Darkhan (“Blacksmith”) was built with extensive economic assistance from the Soviet Union in the 1960’s. As its name implies, the city was originally conceived to be a manufacturing site for Mongolia’s northern territory.
The vestigial traces of Soviet engineering and planning fascinate me. I can’t help but wonder what goes on in the factories.
Who are the people that work there? What are they making? Where do they live? Making pictures is my way to find the answers to my questions. I’m drawn to the grit, the light, the texture, and the tools.
