This was a three week road trip I took to Montana in June of 2022 with my husband and three dogs. It was the first road trip in our Sprinter van my husband converted. Two weeks of the trip were spent in Montana. We had originally planned to visit Glacier, Grand Teton & Yellowstone national parks. This trip did not go as planned. There was massive flooding in Yellowstone a few days before we left. That was not the only thing, our Glacier visit also did not go as planned. It was the first year of vehicle reservations in the park and a late spring snow storm kept the Going to the Sun Road closed. We were disappointed. I ended up walking into the Flathead Ranger Station and asking " Where would you go if you had a week and a 4x4 Sprinter Van?" The guy behind the desk was very happy to suggest a number of beautiful places without the crowds. I am not a newbie to the dispersed camping in the west. It is a wonderful way to find some solitude. It takes a little research to find out where exactly. Many of these images are from our wanderings on the roads less traveled. We stopped on our way out and back at both Makoshika and Fork Ransom, both were lovely state parks that we wanted a little more time to explore. Our moto that trip became, "if it wasn't 20 miles down a dirt road it wasn't for us."
I should also mention that I try to find interesting roadside attractions to photograph our 3.75 lb Chihuahua, Mr. Pink (check out my entire project about him). North Dakota has many including the world's largest buffalo, the world's largest dairy cow and the not to be missed Enchanted Highway.
